Weekend in Solothurn

Our Year in Lugano, Switzerland - Fall 2004

We had a mandatory all-day meeting in Solothurn, Switzerland, in the German speaking part of the country, on September 17.

We left on Thursday morning, September 16th, for Solothurn. We had beautiful, clear skies until we reached the San Gottardo pass - then it was cloudy and foggy on the other side of the mountain range.
During our time in Solothurn we had a chance to meet up again with Terry, who is the other exchange teacher from the US. She is a teacher at Elgin Academy in Illinois, and she is doing her exchange in the town of Bex, in French speaking Switzerland. We also met a teacher from Germany who was teaching PE in the French area. She doesn't speak French very well, so she was in a similar situation like Rick. All the other teachers were from Canada. Switzerland has had a long time exchange going with French speaking teachers from Canada, and they are expanding to other countries.
During the conference they talked about the education system in Switzerland, and also cultural differences and we shared our experiences. The entire conference was in French, so I had to translate for Rick, since he was the only one who did not speak French.
The conference was held at the Youth Hostel of Solothurn, and we had lunch together at the hotel Kreuz. For those who did not have to take a train home that evening, we all met at 8pm for dinner. We went to a fondue restaurant, but a dinner of just bread dipped in melted cheese did not appeal to me!
On our ride home on Saturday, the skies were perfectly clear the entire way. Rick and I just bounced back and forth to each side of the train the whole time, trying to capture every beautiful sight! What a blessing and such a treat to have that beautiful weather!
