Visit from Gail's mom and dad

Our Year in Lugano, Switzerland - Fall 2004

My mom and dad came to visit us for 17 days. Here are some highlights of their trip! I also have some pictures on the Bits and Pieces page, which I put on the site before I started this page, but I'm too lazy to change it all over to this one page. So just click the link to see the other pictures from my parent's visit!

On the few clear days we were blessed with, we went out into the countryside. We drove to the Valle Verzasca where they saw the town on Lavertezzo, with the quaint stone bridge. Then we went on to Sonogno where we took a walk to a waterfall and enjoyed the scenery and the cows!

Then on the way home, we drove to the little ancient town of Corippo. The whole town is made of stone and yes, people are still living there! Dad was in awe that people could live in such a place -and so high in the moutains and on such a slope!

Picking out Italian cookies at the market in Luino, Italy, on Lake Maggiore

We went twice to the big market in Luino, Italy, which is just over the Swiss border on Lago Maggiore. Dad bought a red sweater and a hat there, and of course, some Italian cookies! We enjoyed the good prices!

In these next few pictures, we took a ride to Morcote, which is at the southern end of Lake Lugano. You can see how high we are, and Mom climbed all the stairs from the lakefront to this point!! It was a very charming town and we enjoyed it thoroughly, having lunch along the lakefront after our long hike.

We took a ride into one of the valleys called Centovalli, outside of Locarno. As we wound thru the valley, we crossed the border into Italy and as we came around a curve, this is the site we saw! A huge cathedral in this small town of Re, practically in the middle of nowhere. It was a great autumn site!

On our ride back to Lugano we went up the coast of Lake Lugano, where we found a castle in the water!

We drove to Bellagio, Italy, along the coast of Lake Como. We didn't expect it to be such a high, narrow, winding road! After arriving in Bellagio, I saw a T-shirt that said "I survived the drive to Bellagio!" Well that was the truth!
We enjoyed lunch outside by the lakefront in Bellagio and then we took the ferry boat across the lake to take the easier drive home. On the way we stopped at a little town in Italy to have some coffee before going back across the Swiss border.
